Genesis 3:3

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Cross-reference

Eve quotes Genesis 2:16 but adds 'nor shall you touch it' — an embellishment not in God's original command, already distorting His word under the serpent's influence.

Genesis 2:17 Historical context

In Genesis 2:17, God gives the original command: eat from this tree and you will die. Eve here restates that specific warning.

In Colossians 2:21, Paul warns against adding human restrictions ('Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch') to God's commands — Eve's addition of 'neither shall you touch' is an early example of this same error.

In Exodus 19:12, God sets a boundary around Sinai: do not touch the mountain. The idea of a deadly divine prohibition is similar.
