Genesis 31:13

I am the God of Beth–el, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.

Genesis 31:3 is God's initial command to return home. Genesis 31:13 reinforces it with added detail about the Bethel pillar and vow, anchoring the command in Jacob's past commitment.

In 31:5 Jacob tells his wives God has been with him. Genesis 31:13 is God Himself speaking, confirming exactly what Jacob testified to his family.

Genesis 31:11 Historical context

Genesis 31:11 begins the divine dream encounter ('The angel of God said to me'). Verse 31:13 continues that same speech with God's command to leave.

Genesis 31:28 Historical context

God's command to leave 'at once' (31:13) explains the very haste Laban complains about in 31:28 — Jacob's abrupt departure without a farewell.

Genesis 28:12-22 describes Jacob's vow at Bethel, which God references to affirm His identity.

In Genesis 32:9, Jacob prays recalling God's words from 31:13 — 'Go back to your country and I will make you prosper' — showing he trusted this command even amid fear of Esau.

Genesis 31:13 references 'where you anointed a pillar' — that is the very act recorded in 28:18, when Jacob set up and anointed a stone at Bethel.

Genesis 31:13 references 'where you made a vow to me' — that vow is recorded in 28:20, where Jacob pledges devotion if God provides and brings him home safely.

Genesis 35:7 Prophetic fulfillment

Genesis 35:7 has Jacob returning to Bethel, fulfilling the command given in Genesis 31:13.

Both are God commanding Jacob to journey with a Bethel connection. In 35:1, God sends Jacob back to Bethel itself — completing what 31:13 began.
